BenzodiazepinePlease note the adverse effects Benzodiazepine medication, otherwise known as Z-drugs (for example diazepam, alprazolam, bromazepam, zopiclone, triazolam etc., other street names include ‘relaxers’, ‘sleepers’, ‘D5s’, D10s, ‘the blue ones’) can have on people and patients is well known.

Shandon Bells Medical Centre, within stmarysgp, intends to reduce the amount of Benzodiazepine medications it prescribes, with a view to eliminating it for all indications other than their licensed uses.

In the first instance, we are introducing two new measures:

1. No NEW patients will be accepted for registration with the practice if they are already being prescribed or known to be using benzodiazepine medications on a regular basis.

2. Any existing patients of these two practices taking regular benzodiazepines can make an appointment with the Doctor to discuss reducing, with a view coming off, their medication.

We hope you understand that we are doing this for patient safety and quality of life reasons, and that you will respect the decision we have made. More importantly if you are someone who is taking one of these drugs we really hope to see you soon to discuss how we can help you wean off them.
